There’s no question about how God calls on us to love him.  Jesus himself summarized it in his calling to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. (Mark 12.30) But the question for today is, “How much do I invest in others? Is there a Biblical standard for loving spouse, family and friends? Well, it just so happens there is! Again from Jesus, “Love your neighbor – as yourself.” (Mark 12.31) How odd…? Jesus doesn’t say to love your neighbor instead of yourself. Rather, he takes our natural instincts for self-preservation – and uses it as the standard to love others. This is what I call the love paradox.
